Google Unveils Platform 37 and AI Exchange in London to Advance AI Research and Education

Google and Google DeepMind unveil Platform 37 in London, a cutting-edge AI hub featuring The AI Exchange, to advance responsible AI research and public engagement.

Google and Google DeepMind have announced the opening of Platform 37, a new building near King’s Cross station in London, which will serve as a central hub for their artificial intelligence teams in the UK. The building will also feature a public education space called The AI Exchange, designed to foster understanding and dialogue around artificial intelligence through exhibitions, programming, and discussions. The company expects researchers, engineers, ethicists, and other specialists from Google DeepMind and Google to begin moving into Platform 37 this summer.

Platform 37 is named in part for its location and for a significant moment in AI history—“Move 37,” a strategic decision made by Google DeepMind’s AlphaGo system in its 2016 match against Go world champion Lee Sedol. Initially perceived as a mistake by human experts, the move ultimately proved pivotal in securing AlphaGo’s victory and is regarded as a landmark moment in AI development.

Demis Hassabis, CEO and Co-Founder of Google DeepMind, highlighted the UK’s role in the global AI landscape, stating, “The UK is a center of extraordinary technological innovation with incredible talent and world-class institutions.” He emphasized that the new building would bring together multidisciplinary teams focused on the safe and responsible development of AI technologies.

The AI Exchange, situated on the ground floor of Platform 37, aims to be an accessible space for the public to engage with AI. Google plans to offer a variety of activities, including free educational programs and interactive exhibitions, all centered on the impact of artificial intelligence on society. This initiative aligns with a broader trend in the tech sector to enhance public awareness and understanding of AI technologies and their implications for various aspects of life.

In addition to educational programs, the space is envisioned as a venue for informal learning, allowing educators and students to explore complex AI concepts outside conventional classroom settings.

Architects Thomas Heatherwick and Bjarke Ingels designed Platform 37 as one of Google’s most ambitious building projects in Europe. The structure uses low-carbon construction materials and integrates energy-efficient systems to minimize its environmental footprint. Its innovative “hung” design allows for a column-free interior, enabling flexible workspace configurations that can adapt to the evolving needs of research teams.

The building features a rooftop garden developed in collaboration with the London Wildlife Trust and the London Borough of Camden, which aims to enhance local biodiversity and provide scenic views of the city.

Google anticipates that Platform 37 will support teams engaged in various areas of AI research and application. Since the landmark AlphaGo match nearly a decade ago, AI systems created by Google DeepMind have been employed in diverse fields such as materials discovery, fusion energy research, mathematical reasoning, and biology. The new facility is expected to facilitate collaboration among multidisciplinary teams, fostering innovation across these domains.

Hassabis envisions Platform 37 as more than just an office space. “I see this spectacular building as more than an office—it is a monument to science and intelligence. Our multi-disciplinary teams will work together here to achieve the next world-changing breakthroughs like AlphaGo, pioneering the path towards artificial general intelligence to build a better future for the benefit of everyone,” he remarked.

As Google DeepMind continues to expand its AI research programs, the establishment of Platform 37 underscores the company’s commitment to advancing artificial intelligence and its applications while engaging the public in meaningful discussions about the technology’s role in society.

The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 are currently open for submissions, recognizing education technology organizations that demonstrate measurable impact across K–12, higher education, and lifelong learning. The awards invite entries from the UK, the Americas, and globally, with submissions evaluated based on evidence of outcomes and real-world applications.
