A floating fish farm off the coast of southern China is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence to enhance aquaculture efficiency while minimizing labor costs. The vessel, named “Zhanjiang Bay No.1,” is located near Naozhou Island in Guangdong province and is designed to cultivate approximately 200 tonnes of fish, operated by only three to four workers.
The farm utilizes a control room where staff can manage feeding, monitor fish growth, and oversee harvesting, largely through automated processes. Underwater cameras and sonar systems are deployed to gather data on fish behavior, water temperature, and oxygen levels. This data is relayed to an AI system that analyzes various metrics, including fish size, population density, and feeding patterns, to inform daily operations.
Developers anticipate that the AI system will evolve into a fully integrated model that encompasses sensing, prediction, and control. Currently, large volumes of underwater video and acoustic data are being collected to train the AI, enabling it to make more informed decisions regarding aspects like fry stocking density and optimal harvesting times.
