Anthropic Tests Claude Mythos, Its Most Advanced AI Model, Amid Cybersecurity Risks

Anthropic tests its advanced AI model Claude Mythos amid cybersecurity risks, revealing plans for a Capybara tier designed to surpass previous models in security capabilities.

Anthropic has confirmed to Fortune that it is testing its most advanced AI model to date, known as Claude Mythos. This announcement follows a data leak that revealed details about the model, including its potential capabilities and associated cybersecurity risks. As the company prepares for the rollout, the implications of Claude Mythos may extend beyond innovation, raising concerns over its potential use in cyberattacks.

The leak originated from Anthropic’s content management system and exposed nearly 3,000 unpublished assets, including draft blog posts, images, and PDFs related to the model. Insights gleaned from the leak indicate that Claude Mythos will introduce a new tier named Capybara, which is anticipated to surpass previous models such as Opus in performance metrics, particularly in reasoning, coding, and cybersecurity assessments.

A draft blog post from Anthropic cautioned that Claude Mythos is “currently far ahead of any other AI model in cyber capabilities,” suggesting it could catalyze a new wave of cyberattacks that outpace current defense mechanisms. To mitigate these risks, Anthropic plans to initially release Claude Mythos to cybersecurity professionals, aiming to bolster defenses against potential AI-driven exploits.

In addition to cybersecurity concerns, the leaked documents also unveiled plans for an exclusive retreat aimed at discussing AI adoption among European business leaders. Scheduled to take place at an 18th-century manor in the English countryside, the event will reportedly feature discussions led by CEO Dario Amodei and demonstrations of unreleased capabilities of Claude Mythos.

Despite its advancements, Anthropic’s security measures have already faced challenges. The company has previously thwarted hacking attempts attributed to groups linked to the Chinese government, which targeted various sectors including technology, finance, and government agencies. This history underscores the urgency with which Anthropic approaches the launch of Claude Mythos, particularly in light of its enhanced capabilities.

The ramifications of Claude Mythos extend beyond mere technological innovation; they highlight a broader trend in the AI landscape where advancements can lead to both beneficial applications and significant risks. As companies like Anthropic navigate this dual-edged sword, the balance between leveraging AI for progress and mitigating its potential for harm remains a critical concern.

Looking ahead, the release of Claude Mythos may signal a crucial turning point in the evolving relationship between AI and cybersecurity. By engaging cyber defenders early in the deployment process, Anthropic aims to establish a proactive approach to AI’s integration into security practices, possibly setting a precedent for how future AI models are introduced to the market.

At AIPressa, my work focuses on exploring the paradox of AI in cybersecurity: it's both our best defense and our greatest threat. I've closely followed how AI systems detect vulnerabilities in milliseconds while attackers simultaneously use them to create increasingly sophisticated malware. My approach: explaining technical complexities in an accessible way without losing the urgency of the topic. When I'm not researching the latest AI-driven threats, I'm probably testing security tools or reading about the next attack vector keeping CISOs awake at night.
