Agile Robots Partners with Google DeepMind to Enhance Industrial Robotics Performance

Agile Robots partners with Google DeepMind to transform industrial automation, leveraging Gemini Robotics to enhance performance across over 20,000 global installations.

Agile Robots SE announced this week a collaboration with Google DeepMind, the AI research lab of Alphabet, aimed at integrating DeepMind’s Gemini Robotics foundation models with Agile Robots’ scalable industrial robotics platform. This partnership seeks to enhance robot performance and broaden automation capabilities within industrial environments by marrying advanced AI models with sophisticated hardware.

The initiative aims to create robotic systems that operate effectively in real-world production settings, leveraging the strengths of both companies. Agile Robots intends to use its existing portfolio, which includes the Agile ONE humanoid, Agile Hand, FR3 force-sensitive robotic arm, Diana 7 power and force-limited arm, and the Thor series robot arms, as the foundation for this new development.

Founded in 2018, Agile Robots has established itself in the robotics sector with over 20,000 installations of its solutions worldwide, confirming the viability of intelligent automation at scale. According to Zhaopeng Chen, founder and CEO of Agile Robots, the collaboration with DeepMind positions the company at the forefront of an evolving market. “The huge opportunity ahead lies in autonomous, intelligent production systems that can transform entire industries,” Chen stated.

The partnership will focus on a series of development and deployment phases aimed at refining robotic capabilities in practical environments. By utilizing Agile Robots’ hardware in conjunction with DeepMind’s AI systems, the firms aspire to enhance robotic performance through real-world testing, data collection, and iterative model training. “The teams are working in an iterative cycle, continuously testing, learning, and improving system performance,” Chen elaborated, indicating a commitment to ongoing advancements.

The initial focus of this collaboration will target high-value industrial applications, particularly sectors with a pressing need for reliable and adaptable automation solutions. These applications include various industrial and manufacturing tasks that demand consistency and scalability. The partnership is also poised to create an “AI flywheel,” where robots deployed in operational settings generate data that progressively refine AI models, thereby enhancing robot capabilities and facilitating broader application.

As Google DeepMind expands its footprint in the robotics industry, it has initiated several collaborations to advance AI-powered robotics systems. Earlier this year, the firm unveiled plans to work with Boston Dynamics to enhance the capabilities of the Atlas humanoid using Gemini Robotics’ foundation models. Additionally, DeepMind is partnering with Apptronik to apply its foundation models to the Apollo humanoid robot platform. Meanwhile, Intrinsic Innovation LLC has recently joined Google as a separate unit, expected to develop its robotics platform while utilizing Google Gemini models and Cloud infrastructure.

The continuing collaboration between Agile Robots and Google DeepMind underscores a significant trend in the robotics sector, where the integration of AI is seen as a critical factor in the evolution of automation technology. As these companies work together to fine-tune robotic systems, they are not only creating more capable machines but also laying the groundwork for an era where intelligent automation could reshape entire industries.
