Rivian Delays AI Assistant Launch, Rolls Out Stability Update with Connectivity Enhancements

Rivian delays its highly anticipated AI voice assistant, rolling out software update 2026.07 focused on connectivity and stability enhancements instead.

Rivian’s latest software update, version 2026.07, will not include the much-anticipated Rivian Assistant, the company’s in-house AI voice assistant that was announced in December 2022 and promised for early 2026. Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid had stated that the Rivian Assistant would be available on all existing Rivian vehicles, but as of now, the feature remains absent from the update, which is set to begin rolling out over the next few days.

The Rivian Assistant, a product of a two-year internal development effort, was unveiled during the company’s Autonomy & AI Day on December 11, 2022. Designed to integrate vehicle systems with third-party applications such as Google Calendar, the AI voice interface is intended to enhance user experience in managing infotainment and climate controls. However, it has not materialized four months after the commitment for its launch.

In lieu of the voice assistant, the 2026.07 update focuses on several connectivity improvements, enhancements for Apple Music, and a series of bug fixes predominantly aimed at second-generation R1 vehicles. Among the most notable additions is support for Dolby Audio in Apple Music, which comes with a new streaming quality setting designed to minimize buffering by automatically adjusting audio quality based on connectivity speeds. This feature is enabled by default, although users have the option to override it for higher-quality playback.

Moreover, the update enhances the reliability of Wi-Fi, cellular, and app connections while updating in-vehicle status indicators to better communicate network issues. It also reduces the launch times of infotainment apps during driving sessions. A minor but practical change connects the rear defrost button to the front windshield wiper heating element, allowing both to activate simultaneously.

More substantive fixes are reserved for the second-generation R1 vehicles. For instance, the update addresses a bug that previously caused the vehicle to instantly reject Lane Change on Command requests, which could disrupt the flow of Universal Hands-Free highway driving. Additionally, messaging for unsuccessful hands-free engagement requests has been improved to clarify why the system declined activation, such as when turn signals are engaged or hands are off the steering wheel.

Rivian has also tackled several issues affecting vehicle dynamics. The update aims to reduce occurrences of steering wheel vibrations at highway speeds and resolves a bug that caused fluctuations in usable battery range, which previously led to unreliable range estimates. The company asserts that these estimations should now behave more consistently, addressing a rare electronic parking braking fault that emerged after the vehicle awakened, as well as a charge port door issue stemming from water ingress.

In 2025, Rivian provided 11 over-the-air updates, yet the absence of the voice assistant in this latest release highlights lingering consumer frustrations. The voice assistant’s functionality is designed to manage climate controls and other infotainment tasks by integrating third-party systems through an agentic framework developed by Rivian engineers. Google Calendar was identified as the first integration, and Bensaid emphasized at the December event the transformative potential of incorporating third-party agents into vehicle applications.

The assistant is expected to be enhanced by frontier large language models, including Google Vertex AI and Gemini, to facilitate grounded data, natural conversation, and reasoning. An offline-capable version of the assistant is also planned for the upcoming R2 models. As for the 2026.07 release notes, the feature has yet to be delivered, leaving customers awaiting its introduction in early 2026.

Text messaging integration, frequently cited as a top request among Rivian’s community, remains missing as well. While Rivian has indicated that Google integration enabling texting is in development, the company has not provided a specific timeline for its rollout. Additionally, features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto continue to remain unavailable for R1 models, with no announcements regarding their potential inclusion in the R2 series, which is set to begin employee deliveries this month.

This latest update marks only the second public software release of 2026, following version 2026.03, which was rolled out on February 19. That previous update introduced features such as cold weather range transparency, Launch Mode for Gen 1 Performance models, an Apple Watch companion app, and enhancements to infotainment systems. The interval between updates has lengthened to approximately six weeks, a notable change from the monthly cadence maintained in 2025. Rivian’s software system currently supports hands-free assisted driving on 3.5 million miles of roads across the U.S. and Canada, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to developing its technology platform.
