Samsung Electronics has announced a significant advancement in its robotics technology, unveiling its new AI control system, dubbed ‘Shallow·π’. This innovation reportedly reduces the computing steps of robot control AI models to one-third of traditional levels, effectively boosting situational judgment speed to 17.2 times per second. This leap in capability is facilitated by employing Knowledge Distillation technology, which compresses the core intelligence of large AI models into smaller, more efficient versions. The breakthrough has achieved a 95% success rate in ultra-precision tasks, such as inserting water hoses with sub-1mm accuracy.

This development comes amidst Samsung’s broader strategic initiative to transition towards fully autonomous factories by 2030, as part of its mid-to-long-term roadmap. The company has pledged an unprecedented R&D investment exceeding 100 trillion won this year, marking its largest commitment to innovation yet. Industry analysts are closely monitoring this move, as Samsung aims to secure technological advantages against stiff competition, particularly from Chinese firms that currently lead the global humanoid robot market, which is projected to reach $4.4 billion next year.

In a broader context, the manufacturing sector in South Korea is witnessing an acceleration in digital innovation. The application of digital twin technology, which replicates physical assets in virtual environments, has also gained traction among major manufacturers. For instance, Kia reported a reduction of 3,750 hours in annual equipment maintenance labor after adopting this technology. The digital twin approach significantly cut the time required to address equipment malfunctions, demonstrating its potential as a practical efficiency tool.

Samsung’s announcement comes at a time when consumer behavior is rapidly shifting due to economic pressures, notably high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates. Retailers such as Daiso are experiencing record sales, with March credit card payments reaching approximately 230.7 billion won, an all-time high for the company. This trend is reflective of a broader consumer transition towards more affordable options amid economic uncertainty, further underscoring the importance of digital and AI advancements in enhancing operational efficiencies.

The increase in robot and AI technology adoption is not limited to manufacturing. In the residential sector, companies are leveraging large-scale apartment complexes in South Korea as testing grounds for robotics. For instance, Robotis’ autonomous robot, ‘Gaemi’, has successfully completed around 4,000 pay-as-you-throw garbage collections and parcel deliveries in a Guro-gu apartment complex. Meanwhile, Neubility operates over 300 robots across about 140 sites, offering patrol and delivery services. A recent survey indicated a resident satisfaction score of 4.13 out of 5 for patrol robot services, demonstrating the growing acceptance of robotics in everyday life.

In the realm of K-beauty, Korea’s perfume exports have seen remarkable growth, with January figures hitting $6.52 million, the highest since records began in 1988. This surge is emblematic of the K-beauty wave, as local brands increasingly capture market share both domestically and internationally. Notably, Korea’s trade balance in perfume with the U.S.—the world’s largest perfume market—turned positive for the first time in 28 years, indicating a shift in competitive dynamics within the beauty sector.
