Egoras Technologies is set to launch an artificial intelligence-powered commerce smartphone in collaboration with Airtel Nigeria, aimed at empowering small businesses in Nigeria that have been largely excluded from digital payments and modern business tools. The device, known as the Cube Phone, is scheduled for release on April 28, and is positioned as a comprehensive business platform that integrates free internet access for commercial use, contactless payment capabilities, AI business tools, and blockchain-based data privacy features.
According to a statement released on Monday by Egoras CEO Ugoji Harry, this initiative seeks to address a significant gap in Nigeria’s economy. With an estimated 40 million micro and small businesses in the country, fewer than eight percent currently accept digital payments. This limitation is primarily due to high costs associated with point-of-sale terminals, monthly data expenses, and concerns regarding data privacy.
Harry emphasized that the objective behind the Cube Phone was not to create a superior device, but rather to eliminate the obstacles that deter business owners from their first digital transaction. “The phone is simply what it took to do that,” he stated.
Central to the Cube Phone’s functionality is a zero-rating agreement with Airtel Nigeria, which waives mobile data charges for all business-related activities conducted via CubeOS, the phone’s proprietary operating system. This means that payments, AI consultations, and business applications can be accessed without incurring daily limits, throttling, or subscription fees, thereby significantly reducing operating costs for merchants.
Many small business owners in Nigeria typically spend between N5,000 and N10,000 monthly on mobile data. By removing these expenses, Harry noted that users would likely recover the cost of the device within months, even before factoring in additional revenue generated through digital payments and productivity improvements driven by AI.
Egoras has also secured rights to extend zero-rated access to third-party developers creating applications on CubeOS, describing this model as groundbreaking in the African telecommunications landscape. The company is in advanced discussions with MTN Nigeria and Globacom to further expand its carrier partnerships.
The distribution model for the Cube Phone is designed for organic growth, with each device introducing 100 payment cards into local economies. As adoption increases, it is anticipated that some cardholders will invest in their own devices, further expanding the payment network. Egoras projects the deployment of one million phones and 100 million Cube Cards within the first year.
The Cube Phone comes preloaded with a suite of AI business tools, featuring four specialized digital assistants. The AI Legal assistant drafts contracts and manages compliance filings in local languages, while the AI CFO tracks transactions and generates IFRS-compliant financial statements, also detecting fraud. The AI Coder creates mini-applications from natural language instructions, and the AI HR manages recruitment, payroll, and performance reviews while adhering to Nigerian labor laws.
All interactions with the AI are encrypted directly on the device and stored on the Cube Blockchain, ensuring that third parties, including Egoras, cannot access user data. The architecture of CubeOS maintains encrypted messages and financial records on the handset, with Airtel providing encrypted connectivity transport that prevents visibility into user content. Payments made with Cube Cards are authenticated and settled on-chain, eliminating reliance on centralized processing systems.
Egoras claims that no existing products in Africa currently merge hardware, payments infrastructure, merchant card distribution, AI tools, zero-rated connectivity, and blockchain privacy features into a single platform. Most competitors tend to focus on individual markets, with firms like Moniepoint and Opay concentrating on payment services while manufacturers like Tecno and Itel focus on hardware.
The launch of the Cube Phone stands to significantly impact the landscape for small businesses in Nigeria, offering them the tools necessary to engage with the burgeoning digital economy. By bridging the gap between traditional business practices and digital transactions, Egoras aims to catalyze a shift towards broader adoption of digital payments and enhanced productivity among Nigeria’s vast micro and small business sector.
