In a recent post, Chiara Barbeschi, WEF’s specialist in cyber resilience, alongside Tarik Fayad from the MENA Centre for AI Excellence, characterized this development as a systemic inflection point. They argue that frontier AI is transforming cybersecurity into a rapidly evolving contest, where the competitive edge hinges on how swiftly organizations can incorporate AI into their defense strategies. The duo emphasizes that governance, safeguards, and controlled access to these powerful models are becoming increasingly essential, as the very capabilities designed to bolster resilience can also be repurposed to amplify large-scale cyber threats if misapplied.

The announcement on April 7 by Anthropic regarding the release of the Claude Mythos Preview—a frontier AI model deemed so potent that it was not made publicly available—signals a pivotal change in the AI landscape, where deployment constraints now stem more from security concerns than commercial ones.

According to Anthropic, Mythos is capable of autonomously identifying previously unknown vulnerabilities, generating operational exploits, and executing intricate cyber operations with minimal human oversight. Initial testing has identified multiple related weaknesses across various systems, although these findings require further validation and differ in severity and potential for real-world exploitation.

This situation reflects a broader shift where frontier AI systems are becoming not only more autonomous and powerful but also increasingly challenging to control once deployed. Experts suggest treating these models not merely as consumer products but as strategic assets, highlighting a new reality in which AI capabilities are advancing faster than regulatory and safety measures, making security the central gatekeeper for their release.

They point out that tasks which once necessitated specialized teams working for weeks or months can now be executed in hours. This development has two immediate ramifications: it could significantly enhance defenses by accelerating the identification of vulnerabilities, but it equally lowers the threshold for sophisticated cyberattacks, enabling a broader range of actors to operate at heightened levels.

This is not merely a cybersecurity issue; it is a resilience issue for global stability, as critical infrastructure, financial systems, and supply chains increasingly depend on digital ecosystems vulnerable to faster and more scalable attacks.

Barbeschi and Fayad identify three pressing questions for business and security leaders. First, will AI simplify the execution of cyberattacks? The answer is affirmative, though unevenly. By automating complex technical tasks, models like Mythos can lower the barriers for attacks on less secure systems, enabling these breaches to be executed with limited human intervention. However, more complex and well-protected environments are expected to still necessitate skilled operators, suggesting an overall rise in incident frequency alongside a concentration of advanced attacks by adept actors.

The second question concerns whether organizations are prepared to respond at AI speed. Currently, many organizations struggle to keep pace with an ever-evolving threat landscape, with a significant proportion of leaders labeling AI-driven vulnerabilities as the fastest-growing cyber risk. As AI accelerates vulnerability discovery, organizations will face a bottleneck in addressing these issues quickly enough, leading to the obsolescence of patch cycles measured in weeks in an environment where exploitation can occur within hours.

The third issue revolves around control, as access to these capabilities remains unclear. Anthropic has chosen to restrict Mythos to a select group of trusted partners instead of a broader release, yet globally accepted rules governing access and control for such systems are still lacking.

While Anthropic’s approach involves limiting access and collaborating with a few trusted organizations to secure critical systems before wider deployment, this strategy marks only the beginning. As similar systems are expected to emerge throughout the industry, the urgency for coordinated action grows.

For business and policy leaders, the priorities are becoming increasingly clear. Cyber risk must be elevated to a strategic concern within boardrooms, with defined accountability. Organizations will need to invest in AI-native defenses capable of matching the speed and scale of AI-driven attacks, particularly through automated detection and response. Collaboration between public and private sectors will be crucial, as no single entity can tackle this risk independently.

Moreover, response timelines must significantly compress; detection, remediation, and patching cycles must accelerate to keep up with threats that can evolve and be exploited in mere hours. Cybersecurity is no longer just a technical function; it has evolved into a fundamental pillar of economic resilience, trust, and stability.

Barbeschi and Fayad assert that Anthropic’s Mythos provides a glimpse into a future where AI both reinforces and destabilizes the digital frameworks underpinning the global economy. They caution that this transition may not be seamless. While defensive capabilities are advancing, they are doing so unevenly, with offensive capabilities likely to proliferate more rapidly, creating a heightened risk period until a new equilibrium is established.

As the pace of AI development continues to outstrip governance, coordination, and security practices, the key challenge extends beyond technology; it is increasingly institutional and geopolitical. As nations and corporations race to innovate and deploy frontier AI capabilities, varying approaches to access, control, and security may lead to fragmented standards, uneven protections, and greater systemic vulnerabilities. “The question is no longer whether such capabilities will emerge, but whether institutions can adapt quickly enough to manage them,” the post concluded. “The answer will shape not only the future of cybersecurity but also the resilience of the digital systems on which societies and economies increasingly depend.”
