Experts Advise on Using AI Tools for Efficient Summer Travel Planning

Experts recommend leveraging AI tools from Google and Kayak to streamline travel planning and save money with price trackers and personalized itineraries this summer.

As travelers gear up for summer trips, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into travel planning is becoming increasingly evident. Experts suggest that while AI cannot wholly replicate the personal touch of a well-traveled friend’s advice, it can significantly streamline various aspects of the travel-planning process. AI tools can assist in tracking flight and hotel prices, creating custom itineraries based on individual preferences, and even understanding the nuances of travel insurance policies, according to travel expert Katy Nastro.

Nastro, from the airfare monitoring site Going, advises travelers to implement AI thoughtfully, while also emphasizing the importance of verifying AI-generated tips and recommendations. With a growing number of companies launching AI-powered dashboards that analyze historical pricing data, travelers have access to additional resources that may help them save money this summer.

One notable tool is the hotel price tracker from Google Travel, which allows users to set alerts for specific hotels. By searching for a desired hotel and toggling the price tracker, users can receive notifications via email if the price changes for their selected dates. “The key this year is being able to give yourself the option to save down the road if fares or rates drop,” Nastro said, highlighting the feature’s usefulness.

Additions to Google’s offerings, such as Google Flight Deals, transform the exploration of travel options into an AI-driven agent that searches for the best deals. Nastro commended its user-friendly interface but cautioned travelers to “take the output with a grain of salt.” To maximize the utility of these tools, she recommends specificity in searches, as generic queries may yield undesirable options, ignoring current travel advisories and local conditions.

For building comprehensive trip itineraries, Google’s AI Mode allows users to customize their plans through a side panel, facilitating the brainstorming and booking process. By outlining trip parameters, users can request flight options, hotel recommendations, and even local attractions displayed on a map. Nastro emphasizes cross-referencing information from platforms like Going to gauge historical deal averages, enhancing the confidence in booking decisions.

On a similar note, Kayak has introduced an AI-powered conversational planning experience that enables users to search, compare, and book trips while receiving tailored results based on personalized inquiries. Even in the cruise sector, AI is simplifying bookings. Virgin Voyages has launched Rovey, an AI assistant designed to streamline the cruise booking process by providing tailored feedback on itineraries, cabin categories, and dining options.

As travelers face volatile jet fuel prices and the resultant impact on airfare, Nastro strongly recommends considering travel insurance, particularly for international trips. “This can give you some peace of mind, but who has time to read through the weighty policies before hitting purchase? This is where AI can be a lifesaver,” she noted. By inputting a policy contract into an AI model, travelers can simplify the understanding of key clauses and coverage details, allowing them to avoid surprises during their trips.

For those looking to avoid excess baggage fees, Nastro suggests using AI tools like Fits and Acloset to assist with packing. These platforms help travelers curate their packing lists based on their itinerary and available clothing, potentially preventing overpacking and added costs.

Flexibility remains a key strategy for securing more affordable fares, according to Expedia Group travel expert Melanie Fish. She emphasizes the importance of experimenting with travel dates and destinations to uncover better pricing options. Like Google and other flight trackers, the Expedia app can alert customers when airfare prices drop. Fish encourages looking beyond primary tourist destinations, suggesting that opting for nearby alternatives could unlock substantial savings.

As the travel landscape continues to evolve with AI advancements, tools designed for booking and planning are becoming increasingly sophisticated. With the potential to enhance the travel experience, experts predict that AI will play a larger role in how travelers navigate their journeys, even if the personal touch of human recommendations remains irreplaceable.
