Amazon and Anthropic Expand AI Partnership with $100B Investment in AWS Technologies

Amazon and Anthropic expand their partnership with a $100B investment in AWS, enhancing AI infrastructure and accelerating generative AI adoption globally.

Amazon and Anthropic have announced a significant expansion of their strategic partnership, committing to a 10-year agreement that includes over $100 billion in investments in Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies. This collaboration is set to enhance AI infrastructure, model development, and cloud services, reflecting the companies’ joint efforts to accelerate generative AI adoption across various industries.

Since their initial collaboration in 2023, Amazon and Anthropic have enabled over 100,000 customers to run Anthropic’s Claude models on AWS, establishing Claude as one of the most utilized model families on Amazon Bedrock. The companies are also advancing Project Rainier, a vast AI compute cluster designed for sophisticated model training and deployment.

Under the new agreement, Anthropic will invest heavily in AWS technologies, focusing on Amazon’s custom AI chips, including the Trainium and Graviton processors. This partnership will provide up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity for training and operating advanced AI models, with a significant increase in Trainium3 capacity expected to commence this year. Furthermore, the collaboration aims to boost international AI inference capacity across Asia and Europe to meet the rising global demand for Claude models.

The agreement encompasses future generations of AI chips, including Trainium2, Trainium3, and Trainium4, facilitating Anthropic’s scaling of AI workloads on AWS infrastructure. AWS’s Trainium and Graviton technologies currently support more than 100,000 customers and are pivotal for the majority of inference workloads on Amazon Bedrock.

A new integration will allow AWS customers to access Anthropic’s Claude platform directly through their AWS accounts, simplifying the process by using existing credentials, security controls, and billing systems. Customers will have the flexibility to choose between accessing Claude on Amazon Bedrock or using the Claude-native experience on AWS based on their specific needs.

As part of the expanded relationship, Amazon will invest $5 billion in Anthropic, with an additional $20 billion planned contingent on future commercial milestones. This follows a previous investment of $8 billion, underscoring Amazon’s commitment to the partnership.

“Our custom AI silicon offers high performance at significantly lower cost for customers, which is why it’s in such hot demand. Anthropic’s commitment to run its large language models on AWS Trainium for the next decade reflects the progress we’ve made together on custom silicon, as we continue delivering the technology and infrastructure our customers need to build with generative AI,”

Andy Jassy, CEO, Amazon

“Our users tell us Claude is increasingly essential to how they work, and we need to build the infrastructure to keep pace with rapidly growing demand. Our collaboration with Amazon will allow us to continue advancing AI research while delivering Claude to our customers, including the more than 100,000 building on AWS,”

Dario Amodei, CEO and Co-founder, Anthropic

The companies have highlighted critical joint initiatives, including collaboration on custom silicon development with Amazon’s Annapurna Labs, where Anthropic offers direct feedback to influence future AI chip designs. Project Rainier is touted as one of the world’s largest AI compute clusters, featuring nearly half a million Trainium2 chips, enabling large-scale training and deployment of Claude models.

Both Amazon and Anthropic have noted a growing enterprise adoption of Claude across various sectors. For instance, Lyft utilizes Claude via Amazon Bedrock to automate customer support, resulting in a 87 percent reduction in resolution times, while Pfizer employs Claude to streamline research workflows, saving thousands of scientist hours annually and cutting infrastructure costs.

The two companies have reaffirmed their dedication to making AWS the primary platform for Anthropic’s large-scale model training and deployment, while also allowing Amazon teams to leverage Claude models to enhance services across its broader ecosystem. This partnership not only signifies a strong trajectory of collaboration but also sets a foundation for future advancements in AI technology and infrastructure.
