Google is reportedly developing a new video-generation tool called Omni, as indicated by a recently leaked screenshot from Gemini’s video generation tab. The screenshot includes the phrase, “Start with an idea or try a template. Powered by Omni.” This suggests that Omni may be positioned alongside “Toucan,” an existing video generation tool powered by Veo, which has been highlighted as Google prepares for its I/O 2025 event.
At present, Gemini’s video generation capabilities are driven by Veo 3.1, while image generation utilizes models known as Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro. Google has described Nano Banana Pro as being built on Gemini 3, while Nano Banana 2 is identified as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. The introduction of Omni raises questions about whether it will serve as a new wrapper for Veo, represent a new Gemini video model, or signify an early initiative toward a unified Gemini omni-model capable of generating both images and videos. Given that Omni appears in a visible user interface string, its potential as a public product name cannot be overlooked.
If true (as it is still highly speculative), Gemini will be the first top-tier Omni model with video output!
Currently, Google employs a split-model strategy, utilizing Veo for video and Gemini-based Nano Banana models for image generation. The development of Omni could streamline these efforts into a more cohesive framework. The timing of this announcement is particularly noteworthy, as Google faces intensifying competition in the AI video space, with ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0 leading the benchmarks for video generation technology.
The anticipated launch window for Omni is likely to align with Google I/O 2026, scheduled for May 19–20. Google has indicated that the event will feature updates on Gemini and broader advancements in AI, making it a plausible platform for unveiling the new media-generation capabilities of Omni.
This move reflects a larger trend within the tech industry, as major companies increasingly prioritize integrated AI solutions that can manage multiple types of content from a single model. As AI technology continues to evolve, the demand for robust tools that streamline content creation will only increase. The potential introduction of Omni marks a significant step for Google, as it looks to enhance its offerings in a competitive landscape increasingly dominated by innovative AI solutions.
