Trump Launches “Genesis Mission” to Accelerate Scientific Discovery with AI-Powered Supercomputing

Trump’s “Genesis Mission” aims to revolutionize scientific research using AI supercomputing from national labs, promising breakthroughs in health sciences within five years.

Washington — President Trump signed an executive order on Monday aimed at accelerating scientific discovery through artificial intelligence (AI), directing the Department of Energy and its national laboratories to create an integrated AI platform utilizing both existing and future supercomputers. The initiative, termed the “Genesis Mission,” intends to enhance speed and efficiency in research across various fields, including science, engineering, energy, and healthcare, by leveraging supercomputing technology to analyze vast data sets from federal, university, and private sector sources.

Michael Krastios, science adviser to the president, characterized the Genesis Mission as “the largest marshaling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program.” In a conference call with reporters, he explained that the mission will amalgamate extensive federal data, cutting-edge supercomputing capabilities, and top-tier scientific facilities. “This will shorten discovery timelines from years to days or even hours, empowering scientists to test bolder hypotheses and discover breakthroughs currently unreachable,” Krastios said, highlighting the potential for advancements in areas such as disease therapies and predictive modeling.

As part of this initiative, the Energy Department plans to begin with its existing supercomputers located at 17 national laboratories, while also aiming to develop additional supercomputing resources. The administration has noted significant interest from the private sector, with companies like Nvidia and Dell expressing a willingness to contribute their AI supercomputing capacities to the mission.

Despite the ambitious goals, the funding mechanism for the Genesis Mission remains uncertain. White House officials indicated that Congressional support may be necessary as the initiative progresses. One official stated that the Energy Department already operates “some of the best supercomputing facilities in the world,” and emphasized the administration’s commitment to leverage all available resources for the mission’s success, with a promise of continued investment contingent on Congressional backing.

Looking ahead, officials expressed optimism regarding the potential breakthroughs in health sciences that could result from the Genesis Mission. “I think we will see unbelievable advancements in health sciences, so many diseases today that are unfortunate death sentences,” one of the officials said. They noted that understanding the precise chemistry and biology underpinning these diseases could lead to significant improvements in treatment methods. While acknowledging progress in recent years, the official asserted that the next five years will yield advancements surpassing those of the last half-decade.
