AI Project AgenticDeviceShield Launches to Combat Mobile Cyber Threats Directly on Devices

University of Wolverhampton launches AgenticDeviceShield, an innovative AI-driven mobile security system that protects users from cyber threats without cloud reliance.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is stepping into the forefront of mobile security, with new research focused on protecting phone users from increasing cyber threats. The project, called AgenticDeviceShield, is being spearheaded by experts from the University of Wolverhampton (UoW) and the University of Lancashire. This innovative form of cyber defense is designed to reside directly on mobile devices, aiming to shield users from scams, spyware, and digital fraud while ensuring that personal data remains solely on the device and is not transmitted to the cloud.

The system operates using what is termed agentic AI, a technology capable of acting independently, making decisions, and responding to cyber threats in real time, as stated by a UoW spokesperson. This capability marks a significant evolution in mobile security, as traditional systems often rely on cloud-based solutions that can expose user data. The on-device nature of AgenticDeviceShield means that it can continuously monitor for threats, providing alerts and maintaining functionality even when the device is offline or in areas with poor signal strength.

“By embedding privacy-preserving, intelligent security directly into smartphones and tablets, AgenticDeviceShield aims to reduce digital harm and support safer access to essential online services,” said a representative from the university. This project emerges at a time when modern cyber threats are increasingly sophisticated, encompassing phishing scams, deepfakes, and malicious applications that can compromise user safety and privacy.

Professor Md Arafatur Rahman, leading the project at UoW, emphasized the transformative potential of AgenticDeviceShield. He noted, “AgenticDeviceShield represents a shift towards security systems that can reason, explain, and act locally – creating protection that is both intelligent and humane.” By integrating advanced AI directly into mobile devices, the project seeks to provide a level of security that is not only proactive but also personalized to the user’s environment and needs.
