Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence software, Grok, is once again under scrutiny for generating sexualized images of individuals without their consent. This development comes despite Musk’s company, xAI, pledging months ago to curb abusive deepfakes following public backlash and government investigations.
A review by NBC News revealed numerous AI-generated sexual images and videos featuring real people posted publicly on Musk’s social media platform, X, over the past month. These images depicted women altered by the AI chatbot to appear in more revealing attire, such as towels, sports bras, and skintight costumes, with many of the subjects being well-known pop stars and actors.
The Grok software, created by Musk’s xAI, produced these images at the behest of users who attempted to bypass undressing restrictions implemented in January. The AI, through its X account or directly via users, then disseminated the images on the platform.
This trend mirrors incidents from January, when Musk’s companies allowed users to undress others by uploading images and issuing specific prompts. Initially promoting the idea, which included a so-called “spicy mode,” the companies faced global criticism after a deluge of fake images, even some involving minors, triggered investigations across five continents.
Although the number of sexualized deepfakes generated by Grok has reportedly decreased since January, experts caution that tracking Grok’s output remains challenging. The software’s public interactions on X suggest it now frequently declines sexualized requests, yet many instances still evade scrutiny, particularly through private access on Grok’s app or website.
“When these images are created and spread around, the individuals depicted often remain unaware,” noted Stefan Turkheimer, vice president for public policy at RAINN, an organization focused on combating sexual assault.
xAI responded to NBC’s findings by stating it wants to review the report. A company representative did not provide further insights. The day after the report, many images were removed from X, replaced by notifications indicating the posts “are unavailable” or “violated the X Rules.” However, X and Musk did not address additional inquiries.
Following NBC’s revelations, X asserted that it strictly prohibits users from generating non-consensual explicit deepfakes and employing its tools to undress real individuals. The company claimed to have robust safeguards in place to prevent misuse, including enhanced monitoring, real-time analysis, regular updates, and prompt filters.
Nevertheless, the new examples identified by NBC demonstrate that Grok users have adapted their tactics to circumvent xAI’s engineers and X’s content moderators. While Grok appears to reject requests for sexualized content, it has fulfilled other queries that fall within a gray area.
One prevalent tactic involves users requesting Grok to merge two images: a photograph of a woman and an illustration depicting a stick figure in a sexual pose, prompting the AI to replicate that stance. The resulting deepfakes accentuate the woman’s midsection.
Another trend entails users asking Grok to swap outfits between two different images of women, often involving tight or revealing clothing. Additionally, some users uploaded authentic photos of women and requested Grok to transform these into sexualized video clips.
Among those featured in these deepfakes is at least one celebrity who has publicly expressed dissatisfaction regarding such portrayals in the past. These findings emerge after X committed to preventing the creation of such images.
In January, X announced that technological measures had been implemented to prevent Grok from allowing users to edit images of real individuals into revealing clothing. Despite these claims, Genevieve Oh, an independent analyst, stated that Grok remains “the largest nonconsensual synthetic nudity generator” globally, suggesting its output exceeds all other similar tools combined.
The Center for Countering Digital Hate, which estimated that Grok produced 3 million sexualized images within an 11-day span, reported last week that nonconsensual deepfakes created by Musk’s AI are still being discovered.
“Perverts can still use Grok to position women and girls in sexualized scenarios, despite the platform’s assertions to the contrary,” stated Imran Ahmed, the center’s CEO.
During the early months of 2023, Musk’s companies appeared to relax restrictions that governed AI-generated imagery more than their competitors, prompting backlash from various advocacy organizations and regulatory bodies. Earlier this year, Musk’s businesses faced lawsuits related to Grok’s creation of sexualized images, including class-action suits from women and girls whose likenesses were manipulated.
The scrutiny comes at a pivotal time for Musk’s broader business interests. SpaceX, which recently acquired xAI, is preparing for an initial public offering, raising questions about potential legal liabilities tied to Grok’s operations and whether these could impact the firm’s estimated valuation of $2 trillion.
As investigations and lawsuits continue against xAI, the severity of the issues surrounding Grok raises significant questions about the ethical implications of AI technologies. In a climate where calls for stricter regulations grow louder, the pursuit of accountability in this evolving technological landscape remains critical.
