Advanced AI Poses New Cybersecurity Risks, Warns Palo Alto Networks CTO Lee Klarich

Palo Alto Networks CTO Lee Klarich warns that advanced AI could uncover zero-day vulnerabilities at scale, transforming cybersecurity defenses in just six months.

Government agencies face heightened cybersecurity risks as advanced AI models are set to transform the landscape, according to Lee Klarich, chief technology officer at Palo Alto Networks. Klarich emphasized that the emergence of these frontier AI models signals a critical juncture for cybersecurity defenses. Early testing by Palo Alto Networks indicates these AI systems demonstrate substantial improvements in coding capabilities, enabling more effective identification of vulnerabilities within security frameworks.

“These capabilities, however guardrailed, will not stay contained,” Klarich warned. “Attackers will find the seams in those guardrails.” He highlighted that malicious actors may leverage advanced AI to uncover zero-day vulnerabilities at scale, create exploits in near real time, and develop autonomous attack agents that surpass anything the industry has encountered previously. Within a six-month timeframe, Klarich predicts that AI models with deep cybersecurity capabilities will become commonplace, posing new challenges for organizations lacking suitable safeguards.

Palo Alto security engineers have been assessing the new capabilities and found that frontier AI is particularly effective at identifying vulnerabilities in code. “In less than three weeks, it accomplished the equivalent of a full year’s worth of penetration testing effort,” Klarich noted. This effectiveness extends beyond individual vulnerabilities; advanced AI excels in “vulnerability chaining,” a process that combines multiple lower-severity issues into critical exploit paths. For instance, it can link two medium-severity vulnerabilities with one low-severity issue to create a single critical exploit.

The legacy approach to security simply doesn’t work.

Furthermore, next-gen AI possesses the capability to analyze the entire exposure surface of applications, including public-facing platforms, identifying vulnerabilities that traditional tools often overlook. Klarich asserted that while the framework for defending against AI-driven threats is not entirely new, the standards for implementation must now be stringent. “Organizations that are ‘mostly protected’ are effectively unprotected,” he stated.

Klarich advises organizations to utilize the latest AI models to assess their complete code and application landscape, alongside building a comprehensive asset and exposure inventory. “Remediating and reducing exposure is table-stakes… finding and fixing at pace should now be accelerated,” he emphasized. As the attack cycle times decrease rapidly, he cautioned that the conventional methods of security operations are no longer viable. “The threat has never been more sophisticated,” he concluded, underscoring the critical need for organizations to innovate their cybersecurity strategies in response to evolving threats.
