Seventy percent of professionals believe that 2023 marks a significant turning point for the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the transport sector, signaling a shift from experimental applications to daily operational use. This insight comes from a recent survey conducted by Microlise, which polled 250 decision-makers in the industry.
The survey results indicate a growing confidence among industry leaders regarding the practical applications of AI, with only 14% expressing disagreement and 16% uncertain about the technology’s increasing integration into fleet management. Microlise emphasizes that its findings point to a broader recognition of AI as a valuable tool for enhancing fleet efficiency, reducing operational costs, and fostering sustainable transport practices.
This year’s results starkly contrast with those from Microlise’s 2025 report, where only 36% of respondents felt that AI was being utilized to its full potential. The dramatic change in perspective over the past year underscores the rapid evolution of attitudes towards AI within the transport sector.
Nadeem Raza, CEO of Microlise, remarked on the notable shift in perception, stating, “This year’s findings show just how quickly attitudes towards AI are evolving across the transport sector.” He noted that in just 12 months, the focus has moved from mere curiosity about AI to a stronger emphasis on its ability to deliver tangible operational benefits. “For operators, this is no longer about future potential – it is about practical applications that improve fleet efficiency, reduce cost and strengthen competitiveness,” he added.
The survey underscores the critical importance of adopting intelligent, data-led fleet management strategies. Raza warned that companies that fail to embrace these advancements may struggle to navigate the increasing commercial pressures facing the industry. “Those who embrace intelligent, data-led fleet management will be significantly better placed,” he concluded.
Looking ahead, the significance of AI in the transport sector will be further highlighted at the upcoming Microlise Transport Conference, set to take place at Co-op Live in Manchester on May 12. Dean Garvey-North, the company’s chief technology officer, is scheduled to deliver a keynote address focusing on the advancements and implications of AI in fleet management.
As the industry continues to evolve, the integration of AI technologies promises to reshape operational frameworks, making them leaner and more efficient. With increasing buy-in from decision-makers, the transport sector is poised for a transformation that could redefine its operational landscape in the coming years.
