Howard University announced a significant gift from Autodesk, a leading name in 3D design and engineering software, amounting to $1.95 million. This unrestricted donation aims to bolster the university’s construction engineering and management program, ensuring students are equipped with the necessary skills for success in AI-driven roles.
The funding will support a curriculum designed to prepare students for leadership positions in advanced construction projects by emphasizing digital construction and design. With a focus on experiential learning and interdisciplinary coursework, the program also seeks to diversify leadership within the construction industry by nurturing a new generation of professionals.
Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA, interim president and president emeritus of Howard University, highlighted the importance of this partnership. “This investment reflects the strength of our partnership with Autodesk and our shared commitment to preparing students to lead in a technology-driven world,” he stated in a recent news release.
This latest donation follows a $5 million contribution from Autodesk in 2024, aimed at developing the College of Engineering and Architecture Makerspace. This commitment marked the largest unrestricted gift in the college’s history. The Makerspace, covering 3,400 square feet, is set to enhance hands-on experiences for engineering majors, incorporating a digital fabrication area and a design lab to foster collaboration and innovation among emerging Black engineers.
Beyond serving college students, the Makerspace also aims to inspire STEM education across various grade levels. Autodesk’s Chief Marketing Officer, Dara Treseder, emphasized the importance of this initiative in expanding the talent pool within the engineering sector. “Our partnership with Howard University is rooted in a shared belief: that talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t yet,” Treseder remarked. She further outlined Autodesk’s commitment to equipping Howard students and surrounding communities with the resources necessary to thrive in future job markets.
This donation arrives at a time of heightened focus on AI literacy across Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). In response to the increasing demand for AI competencies in the workforce, Howard University and similar institutions are integrating AI skills into their academic programs, ensuring graduates are prepared to navigate an evolving industry landscape.
Frederick reinforced the university’s commitment to fostering an environment of intellectual rigor and innovation. “At Howard University, we are grounded in a longstanding tradition of intellectual rigor and a commitment to innovation, ensuring our students are not only learning, but doing, with the tools and experiences to make an immediate impact,” he concluded.
This partnership and the accompanying investments underscore a broader trend in education and industry collaboration, aimed at creating pathways for underrepresented groups in technology and engineering. As institutions like Howard University enhance their educational offerings, they play a crucial role in shaping a more inclusive future in the STEM fields.
