Mastiska, a UAE-based fabless semiconductor startup, has successfully raised $10 million in a seed funding round, primarily backed by sovereign wealth funds from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The funding will facilitate the development of data-centre-class inference accelerators and the establishment of a semiconductor company centered around open-source technologies. Founded in 2024 by Suresh Sugumar, Mastiska aims to create sovereign AI hardware that caters to markets seeking independence from suppliers in the U.S. and China.
The capital injection is expected to accelerate Mastiska’s technology stack, driven by the belief that “sovereign AI begins with sovereign silicon.” This principle serves as the foundation for the company’s strategy to develop AI chips through a model-creation team based in Abu Dhabi, alongside a very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design team located in India. The startup plans to provide its sovereign customers with full access to audit chip designs, enhancing cybersecurity assurances.
Mastiska’s target market encompasses not only the UAE but extends to the broader GCC, Southeast Asia, BRICS nations, and the Global South. These regions are increasingly looking to build strategic autonomy in their AI infrastructure, which positions Mastiska uniquely; the company does not intend to compete directly in the ongoing U.S.-China AI chip race.
The company’s first commercial offering will be customized field-programmable gate array (FPGA) cards loaded with Mastiska’s proprietary intellectual property (IP). Unlike typical prototypes, these FPGA cards are designed as deployable accelerators for AI inference workloads. Concurrently, Mastiska’s model team is focusing on the development of brain-inspired architectures, including modified transformers that promise to enhance both performance and energy efficiency.
As the demand for AI technologies escalates, the need for sovereign solutions becomes more pronounced. Countries across the GCC and beyond are emphasizing local development to reduce dependency on external chip ecosystems.
