Soluna and Siemens Launch 2 MW AI Power Stability Pilot to Optimize Renewable Energy Usage

Soluna and Siemens initiate a groundbreaking 2 MW pilot project in Texas to enhance AI computing power stability using renewable energy solutions.

ALBANY, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Soluna Holdings, Inc. (“Soluna” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: SLNH), a developer of green data centers for intensive computing applications, including Bitcoin mining and AI, announced a new partnership with Siemens, a leading technology company in electrification, automation, and digitalization. The collaboration is set to deploy and validate a 2 MW pilot project at Soluna’s Project Grace site in Texas, aiming to address the power demands associated with GPU-driven workloads in a renewable energy context.

As the demand for artificial intelligence (AI) surges, the requirement for high-performance computing capabilities is becoming increasingly crucial. However, the rapid fluctuations in power demand generated by these GPU workloads pose challenges to the stability and quality of power in behind-the-meter environments. The pilot at Project Grace will integrate Siemens’ electrical infrastructure and controls to manage these variations effectively, ultimately creating a blueprint for future AI deployments at renewable generation sites.

“One of the biggest challenges to scaling AI technology is the amount of compute power it demands,” stated John Belizaire, CEO of Soluna. He emphasized the potential for this partnership to leverage existing infrastructure and utilize clean energy that would otherwise go untapped, offering a competitive alternative to traditional grid power. This initiative seeks to foster a mutually beneficial relationship between energy providers and consumers.

Siemens will equip the Project Grace site with its advanced electrical and mechanical systems, including transformers, switchgear, power converters, and ancillary equipment. The pilot will rigorously test these systems within a behind-the-meter environment, establishing performance metrics essential for scalability, grid stability, and energy efficiency. The Siemens SICAM SCADA platform will monitor and control operations throughout the project.

“We believe AI has become foundational to every industry, and we’re focused on removing today’s roadblocks so the technology can scale responsibly,” remarked Brian Dula, President of Electrification and Automation at Siemens Smart Infrastructure USA. He underscored the significance of the pilot in demonstrating how renewable energy can be optimized to support AI workloads effectively.

Anticipating further collaboration, Soluna and Siemens aim to validate an enterprise-grade, repeatable model for behind-the-meter renewable compute. This initiative is designed to combine Siemens’ established power infrastructure with Soluna’s renewable-first data center approach, facilitating faster scaling of AI and high-performance workloads while promoting grid stability and energy efficiency.

As the project develops, both companies are committed to sharing insights and performance data that could influence future deployments of similar technology across the energy sector. By aligning renewable energy sources with advanced computing needs, this partnership represents a significant step forward in addressing the increasing energy demands of modern technology.
