Samsung Reveals Major Bixby Overhaul with Perplexity AI for One UI 8.5

Samsung unveils a groundbreaking Bixby overhaul with Perplexity AI for One UI 8.5, enabling natural dialogue and real-time search capabilities to enhance user experience.

Samsung is set to unveil a significant overhaul of its virtual assistant, Bixby, as part of the upcoming One UI 8.5 update, according to information from a press release that was briefly available before being retracted. This anticipated update promises to transform Bixby into a “conversational device agent,” moving away from its previous reliance on rigid voice commands. Instead, users will be encouraged to engage in natural, intent-based dialogue with their devices, allowing for a more intuitive user experience.

For example, instead of navigating through multiple menus to adjust settings, users will be able to simply articulate their issue. If a user mentions that they are frustrated with the screen timing out while reading, Bixby will recognize the context and automatically activate the “Keep Screen On” feature. Such enhancements are aimed at making interactions more fluid and user-friendly.

Moreover, the integration of Perplexity AI will enable Bixby to handle complex queries with real-time search capabilities. This partnership positions Samsung in line with other tech giants, such as Apple, which is collaborating with ChatGPT for similar improvements in its Siri assistant. Instead of redirecting users to a web browser for detailed inquiries, Bixby will utilize Perplexity’s engine to pull live data and deliver responses directly within its interface. This approach is expected to enhance the practicality and usefulness of Bixby, setting it apart from previous iterations.

The abrupt removal of the announcement on Samsung’s website adds an element of intrigue to the upcoming rollout. It raises questions about whether it was an unintentional release or a strategic decision in light of the development timeline. Beta builds of One UI 8.5 have already provided glimpses of these new functionalities, reinforcing Samsung’s intention to create an AI that understands both the intricacies of the device and the broader internet landscape. This shift also indicates a desire to rely less on Google for core functionalities, opting instead for a more independent AI experience.

While the focus is on Bixby, it is important to note that Gemini AI, another significant player in the Android ecosystem, will remain available on Galaxy devices. Users will have the flexibility to choose between both conversational AI assistants, ensuring a diverse range of functionalities at their fingertips.

The new Bixby is expected to debut alongside the Galaxy S26 series, although early adopters using the S25 lineup may receive a preview sooner. If Samsung can deliver on its promise to provide an assistant that adeptly addresses user inquiries—such as “why is my screen doing this?”—Bixby may finally secure a more prominent place on users’ home screens, potentially changing the way they interact with their devices.
