Elon Musk Showcases xAI’s Grok with Viral AI-Generated Sydney Sweeney Clip

Elon Musk’s xAI unveils Grok Imagine with a viral AI-generated Sydney Sweeney clip, sparking controversy over consent and digital media ethics.

Elon Musk is garnering attention once again for a provocative AI demonstration, this time showcasing an AI-generated clip featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. The 10-second video, aimed at illustrating enhancements to xAI’s Grok Imagine text-to-video tool, rapidly sparked both enthusiasm and criticism across social media platforms. Musk noted that the tool’s audio quality has “greatly improved,” a statement coming just weeks after he faced backlash for a previous controversial remark involving Sweeney.

In the showcased video, a digital avatar of Sydney Sweeney appears inside a spaceship, sharing the screen with another AI-generated character. She delivers the line, “So let me get this straight. Grok videos are now 10 seconds, and the audio is greatly improved?” to which her co-star replies, “Yeah, pretty much… Do you like it?” The scene, replete with atmospheric LED sounds and the low hum of a spaceship, was inspired by a prompt from user Alex Patrascu. Notably, Sweeney’s name was not mentioned in this original prompt, raising questions about how her likeness was created.

The clip comes on the heels of criticism Musk received weeks earlier for a post on X that included a bizarre AI-generated video making light of Sweeney’s physical appearance, alluding to her proportions and suggesting potential back pain. Many deemed the content inappropriate, intensifying scrutiny on Musk’s approach to AI-generated media.

This latest incident has further illuminated the ongoing controversy surrounding Grok Imagine, Musk’s AI platform launched in July 2025. The tool has faced significant criticism for enabling the distribution of sexually explicit AI-generated content. In response, California Attorney General Rob Bonta has initiated an investigation into the proliferation of nonconsensual material, calling recent reports “shocking” and demanding immediate action to address these concerns.

Simultaneously, regulatory scrutiny is increasing in Europe, where officials are reviewing whether Grok Imagine violates the Digital Services Act. Musk’s platform has announced intentions to geoblock content in jurisdictions where it is illegal, though critics argue that the system has proven unreliable. According to a spokesperson from X, “We will geoblock in jurisdictions where such content is illegal,” yet concerns persist regarding the effectiveness of this measure in curbing problematic content generation.

As discussions continue around the ethical implications of AI-generated media, Musk’s latest foray into this realm exemplifies the fine line between innovation and controversy. The rapid advancement of AI technologies raises critical questions about consent and representation, issues that are becoming increasingly relevant as digital content evolves. With both regulatory agencies and the public watching closely, the future of platforms like Grok Imagine remains uncertain, as stakeholders demand accountability and transparency in AI-generated content.
