Morocco’s Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform is prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI) as a cornerstone of its industrial and economic modernization agenda. Minister Delegate Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni emphasized AI’s strategic importance during a recent scientific seminar at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez, which focused on “Artificial Intelligence and Innovation in the Digital Transformation of Enterprises.”
At the seminar, Seghrouchni detailed the government’s initiatives to embed AI throughout Morocco’s economy in alignment with the Digital Morocco 2030 Strategy. A pivotal aspect of this strategy is the “AI Made in Morocco” initiative, which aims to cultivate a national innovation ecosystem built around locally developed technological solutions. This initiative is projected to contribute 100 billion dirhams to the country’s GDP by 2030 and generate 50,000 jobs related to AI.
The seminar yielded a significant outcome with the signing of a founding agreement to establish the Al-Jazari Institute of Industry X.0. This new institution is designed to enhance research, innovation, and collaboration between universities and the industrial sector. The agreement was formalized by the ministries of Industry and Commerce, Digital Transition, and Economy and Finance, along with various academic institutions, including Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Moulay Ismail University, and Al Akhawayn University. The Al-Jazari network aims to create a series of regional centers of excellence that link fundamental research to large-scale industrial application.
Morocco is actively positioning itself as an AI hub for both the African and Arab worlds. Seghrouchni characterized the nation as a potential “third voice” in the realm of AI governance, distinct from the frameworks established by the U.S., Europe, and China. The ministry’s focus is on grounding its approach in ethical, responsible, and sovereignty-conscious principles.
As the world increasingly turns its attention to AI’s capabilities and implications, Morocco’s initiative underscores a commitment to leveraging this technology for economic growth and innovation. The establishment of the Al-Jazari Institute and the broader “AI Made in Morocco” initiative reflect a strategic vision that seeks not only to boost local technological development but also to position Morocco as a key player in the global AI landscape.
