Meta Platforms Inc. is significantly ramping up its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) with the establishment of an “elite AI researchers” team, led by former TikTok executive Yang Song. This initiative aims to enhance engagement and profitability across Meta’s social applications, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The formation of this group, known as the “MRS Research” team, was initially kept under wraps since its inception in October, but recent job postings on LinkedIn have revealed its focus on content and user understanding, as well as retrieval and ranking algorithms.
The MRS Research team operates within Meta’s Recommendation Systems division, which plays a critical role in the home feed algorithms that dictate what users see on the various platforms. According to a report from Business Insider, this group collaborates closely with the Ads division to optimize content delivery to users, ensuring that both engagement and advertising effectiveness are maximized.
In staffing the team, Meta has recruited talents with a strong background in recommendation systems. Notable hires include Lihong Li, previously with Amazon AI research, Xiaolong Wang from OpenAI, and Fei Sha, formerly of Google. The strategic appointment of Yang Song, who previously led TikTok’s recommendation algorithms, is particularly significant given his extensive experience in creating engaging content for users.
Meta’s commitment to AI is underscored by its ambitious three-year plan to invest over $600 billion in the U.S. for the development of AI superintelligence. To date, the company has allocated $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in the AI startup Scale AI. This investment led to the appointment of Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang as the new chief of Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). These strategic moves reflect Meta’s broader vision to leverage AI technology to refine user experience and advertising efficacy.
Alongside the formation of the MRS Research team, Meta has also enhanced its workforce by bringing on Andrew Tulloch, co-founder of the AI research and product firm Thinking Machines Lab, along with two additional AI researchers. This bolstering of talent is indicative of Meta’s drive to innovate through AI solutions.
Recently, Meta unveiled updates to its algorithms and advertising systems, including an enhanced ad serving process for Instagram, powered by a new Adaptive Ranking Model. This model is designed to provide more relevant advertisements to users, further illustrating the company’s focus on utilizing AI to improve user engagement and ad performance.
As Meta continues to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of social media and advertising, its heavy investments in AI research and development highlight a strategic shift towards creating a more personalized and profitable user experience. The formation of specialized teams and the acquisition of leading AI talents indicate that Meta is positioning itself at the forefront of AI innovation in the tech industry.
