San Francisco State University launches its first Student AI Awards, offering $500 prizes to students for innovative AI projects addressing real-world challenges.

San Francisco State University (SFSU) is inviting students to engage with the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) through the inaugural SFSU Student AI Awards, aimed at recognizing innovative contributions to the field. The competition encourages students to showcase their creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking as they apply AI to various domains, from developing cutting-edge tools and AI-driven art to addressing ethical concerns and tackling real-world problems.

“The SFSU Student AI Awards give students a unique opportunity to showcase and apply AI in real-world situations while thinking critically about its impact, both positive and negative,” noted David Ghukasyan, a member of the Awards Organizing Committee. Ghukasyan, a Data Science student at SFSU and active participant in AI initiatives on campus, serves as the event coordinator for the AI Agents Club and is a student ambassador for OpenAI, facilitating workshops and events designed to enhance understanding of AI technologies.

The awards feature four categories that reflect the diverse ways students can engage with AI. “Problem Solving with AI” invites students to craft practical solutions addressing business, social, or technical issues using AI responsibly and effectively. “Integrating AI into Creative Expression” encourages artistic innovation, welcoming submissions in visual art, music, writing, film, and design that thoughtfully incorporate AI while exploring authorship and creativity. “Exploring Societal Impacts and Perspectives” challenges students to engage with AI’s broader implications, including ethics, bias, privacy, labor, and policy, through research, analysis, or multimedia storytelling. Lastly, the “Innovation” category offers an open-ended space for interdisciplinary or unconventional ideas that push boundaries beyond traditional classifications.

Andrew Roderick, assistant vice president of Academic Technology, emphasized the awards’ fundamental focus: “This is about more than just technology. It’s about how students are thinking, experimenting, and shaping the role of AI in their academic work and future careers.”

Students participating in the competition will gain not only valuable experience but also increased visibility. Each of the top winners in the four categories will receive a $500 award, while all approved submissions will earn a certificate and a digital badge. Selected projects will be featured on the SFSU AI website, and finalists will have the opportunity to present their work to industry leaders and professionals. This platform also allows students to create standout projects that can enhance their résumés, portfolios, or graduate school applications.

The competition is open to all SFSU students, encouraging participation either individually or as part of a team. All projects must be original and demonstrate responsible AI use, adhering to California State University (CSU) guidelines.

Students interested in entering the competition can begin by submitting a proposal that includes a project title, a 250 to 500-word description, and an overview of their approach and AI tools. Selected participants will advance to the next round, tasked with creating a five-minute pitch video. The submission period runs through Friday, April 10.

To support students throughout the process, Academic Technology will conduct open forums and office hours, providing guidance and feedback as their ideas develop. “I’m excited to see how students bring their perspectives to life and highlight the work coming out of SFSU,” Ghukasyan remarked, reflecting the enthusiasm surrounding this initiative.

The SFSU Student AI Awards not only promote innovation but also offer a platform for students to explore the vast potential of AI, shaping their understanding and application of this transformative technology. As the world continues to adapt to rapid advancements in AI, initiatives like these play a crucial role in preparing the next generation to navigate the complexities that lie ahead.
