Bessent Declares Anthropic’s Mythos a Game-Changer in US-China AI Competition

Treasury Secretary Bessent touts Anthropic’s Mythos as a transformative AI model, asserting the US will dominate 70-80% of global computing power by 2025.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised Anthropic PBC’s latest AI model, Mythos, as a critical advancement that positions the United States ahead of China in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. Bessent made these remarks during a Wall Street Journal event in Washington on Tuesday, where he downplayed suggestions that China was closing the technological gap, asserting that American AI capabilities are currently only three to six months ahead.

Mythos, which Anthropic describes as exceptionally skilled at identifying vulnerabilities in software and computer systems, is being released to a select group of partners. Bessent emphasized the model’s significance, stating, “This Anthropic mythos model was a step function change in abilities, learning capabilities. It’s all logarithmic. You go from x to the 10th power to x to the 12th and then it’s very difficult to catch up.”

The Treasury Secretary’s comments come in the wake of a recent urgent meeting he held with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and major Wall Street banks, prompted by growing concerns that Anthropic’s innovation could herald a new era of increased cyber risk. Bessent expressed confidence in America’s leadership in AI computing, highlighting the extensive investments being made by hyperscalers such as Meta Platforms Inc and Google in building large data centers. He mentioned that studies suggest the US will control 70 to 80 percent of global computing power in the coming years, a significant increase from the current estimated share of 50 percent.

Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI staffers, including Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, Anthropic has positioned itself as a more responsible steward of AI compared to its competitors. The company’s models, including Claude, have gained traction among enterprise clients in various sectors, including finance and healthcare. To support its growth, Anthropic has committed to investing US$50 billion to establish custom data centers across the United States.

However, Anthropic’s path has not been without obstacles. The Pentagon recently labeled the company a threat to the US supply chain, a designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries. Following this declaration, Anthropic secured a court order last month that prevents the government from banning the use of its technology, arguing that such a move could lead to billions of dollars in lost revenue.

Bessent’s comments reflect a broader narrative regarding the competitive landscape of AI development, particularly between the US and China. The urgency of maintaining a technological edge is palpable amid escalating geopolitical tensions and a race for supremacy in AI capabilities. As investments in infrastructure and innovations like Mythos continue, the implications for both national security and economic growth in the US remain significant.

Looking ahead, the ongoing advancements in AI technology, particularly those driven by companies like Anthropic, may reshape the framework of cybersecurity and software integrity, posing both challenges and opportunities. The evolution of AI will likely influence not only market dynamics but also regulatory considerations as authorities work to balance innovation with safety and security.
