Applications Open: 2026–2027 AI for Science Master’s at AIMS South Africa with Full Scholarships

Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 AI for Science Master’s Programme at AIMS South Africa, offering 40 full Google DeepMind scholarships for emerging researchers.

AI for Science Master’s Programme Opens Applications

The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) South Africa has announced the opening of applications for the 2026–2027 AI for Science Master’s Programme. This competitive, fully residential one-year postgraduate programme integrates rigorous coursework with a structured research component, aiming to harness the convergence of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and mathematical sciences to foster new discoveries across various scientific fields.

AIMS is seeking exceptional candidates from across the African continent who possess a strong mathematical foundation and a keen interest in artificial intelligence and computational science. The programme is tailored for emerging researchers who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, scientific imagination, and a commitment to accelerating discovery in domains such as physics, biology, chemistry, and earth sciences through advanced AI methodologies.

The AI for Science programme combines advanced theoretical training with practical research experience. Participants will engage in core modules led by both international and African experts in machine learning, deep learning, computational modelling, and scientific data analysis. Each student will also undertake a supervised research project, enabling them to apply AI techniques to real-world scientific inquiries and contribute to the development of cutting-edge knowledge in their respective fields.

This initiative emphasizes the application of artificial intelligence to complex scientific challenges, underlining the increasing significance of computational approaches in contemporary research. Participants will learn to utilize AI not only as a set of technical tools but as a transformative framework that enhances the understanding of natural phenomena, optimizes scientific processes, and facilitates new forms of discovery.

AIMS South Africa invites applications from students throughout Africa who meet specific criteria, including a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science, and a demonstrable interest in AI and computational modelling. The ideal candidate should possess a curiosity about the natural world and a commitment to advancing Africa’s scientific and technological development through research and innovation. AIMS particularly encourages applications from those who view AI as a catalyst for scientific advancement.

The programme will select only 40 students for the upcoming cohort, and each admitted student will receive a full Google DeepMind scholarship. This scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and all associated programme costs, ensuring that talented researchers from diverse economic backgrounds can participate. The long-term partnership between Google DeepMind and AIMS underscores a shared commitment to enhancing AI research capabilities across Africa and empowering future leaders in scientific innovation.

Applications will be accepted in two rounds, with the first round commencing on 8 December 2025 and closing at 11:59 PM SAST on 6 March 2026. Early applications are strongly encouraged due to the anticipated high competition for the limited spots available. Detailed information on eligibility criteria, application requirements, and the admissions process can be found on the official programme website: ai.aims.ac.za.

AIMS South Africa is part of the broader AIMS Network, a pan-African initiative dedicated to training the next generation of scientific and technological leaders. Through programmes like AI for Science, AIMS contributes to strengthening Africa’s research ecosystem and enhancing the continent’s role in global scientific advancement. The AI for Science Master’s Programme represents a strategic investment in Africa’s capacity to engage meaningfully in global knowledge production. By providing world-class training supported by international partners, the programme prepares graduates for advanced research, doctoral studies, and leadership roles in academia, industry, and innovation ecosystems across Africa and beyond.
