OpenAI Acquires Chalkie AI for Lesson Planning, Expanding Reach to 500,000 Teachers

OpenAI acquires Chalkie for $4 million, enhancing lesson planning tools for over 500,000 teachers and impacting 10 million students globally

Chalkie, an innovative educational technology startup, has successfully closed a $4 million funding round led by TriplePoint Ventures in March. The company, which has rapidly gained traction, is now used by more than 500,000 teachers and serves over 10 million students globally. Chalkie’s platform enables educators to input a specific topic, select their curriculum, and leverage artificial intelligence to expedite the creation of engaging lesson plans. Each plan is complemented by professionally designed teaching materials and differentiated activity sheets tailored for a diverse range of student abilities.

The founder of Chalkie, Daneshyar, brings a wealth of experience from his previous ventures, including Kanda, which facilitated more than $100 million in loans for UK home improvement businesses. His entrepreneurial background also includes successful participation in Y Combinator and an appearance on the UK television program Dragon’s Den. Joining him as co-founder and CTO is Mark Hughes, who previously established Tutorful, a UK-based tutoring marketplace that at its peak employed over 80 people and raised more than $10 million.

In recognition of its innovative approach, Chalkie has been shortlisted for the prestigious ETIH Innovation Awards 2026. The awards attracted entries from various regions, including the UK, USA, and Canada, highlighting the increasing significance of technology in education, skills development, and workforce transformation. This year’s shortlist underscores organizations that are making measurable impacts in real-world educational settings, showcasing entries that range from AI-driven personalized learning tools to platforms that enhance career readiness.

The submissions for the ETIH Innovation Awards were meticulously reviewed by judges who evaluated each entry on criteria such as innovation, adoption, and demonstrated impact. They focused on how these solutions are effectively implemented across schools, higher education institutions, and professional learning environments. The awards aim to spotlight not just novel ideas but practical applications that contribute to the evolving landscape of education technology.

As the educational sector increasingly turns to technology to enhance learning experiences, Chalkie’s AI-driven platform exemplifies this trend by providing customized resources for teachers and students alike. The company’s growing user base reflects a broader shift towards personalized education, where tailored content meets the diverse needs of learners. The winners of the ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 will be announced on Monday, May 11, 2026, marking an important moment for the organizations recognized for their contributions to the field.

At AIPressa, my work focuses on discovering how artificial intelligence is transforming the way we learn and teach. I've covered everything from adaptive learning platforms to the debate over ethical AI use in classrooms and universities. My approach: balancing enthusiasm for educational innovation with legitimate concerns about equity and access. When I'm not writing about EdTech, I'm probably exploring new AI tools for educators or reflecting on how technology can truly democratize knowledge without leaving anyone behind.
