Anthropic Expands UK Operations with 800-Employee Office, Launches Mythos Testing Program

Anthropic expands its UK operations with an 800-employee office in London and launches the cybersecurity-focused Mythos model for financial institutions.

AI lab Anthropic is set to expand its footprint in the UK with the establishment of a new office capable of accommodating 800 employees in London’s ‘Knowledge Quarter’. This area has become a hub for prominent AI firms, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta. Currently, Anthropic employs approximately 200 individuals in the capital.

Pip White, Anthropic’s head of EMEA north, emphasized the strategic significance of London in a statement, stating, “London is already one of our most important research and commercial hubs outside the US, and our expansion in the Knowledge Quarter gives us the room to grow into.” He highlighted the UK’s blend of ambitious enterprises and institutions that prioritize AI safety, as well as its exceptional pool of AI talent, making it an ideal location for the company’s growth.

The expansion coincides with the growth of Anthropic’s ‘Project Glasswing’ program in the UK, which provides select organizations early access to its new AI model Mythos. This model is designed for cybersecurity professionals to test against their internal defenses, as it has the potential to exploit cyber vulnerabilities. White mentioned that the rollout to select UK financial institutions could begin “in the next week,” reflecting intense interest from UK CEOs in recent discussions.

In the wake of Anthropic’s announcement regarding the Glasswing program, US regulators convened urgent meetings with Wall Street institutions to address the associated risks. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank is expected to hold similar discussions with EU lenders later this week, underscoring the heightened focus on cybersecurity amid growing concerns about AI models like Mythos.

In Australia, the urgency around cybersecurity risks stemming from Anthropic’s offerings has prompted superannuation funds to seek regulatory approval for sharing sensitive intelligence. The industry body, the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia, is requesting authorization from the ACCC to facilitate the sharing of criminal intelligence and to coordinate responses to cyber-attacks. This initiative aims to enhance the protection of Australian retirement savings from emerging threats.

As Anthropic positions itself for substantial growth in the UK, the implications for the broader technology landscape are significant. The move not only reinforces London’s status as a global AI hub but also highlights the urgent need for collaboration among institutions in addressing the challenges posed by advanced AI models in the realm of cybersecurity. With the increasing integration of AI into various sectors, the discourse around safety and regulation will likely intensify, impacting how companies navigate this evolving landscape.
