OpenAI Acquires Promptfoo to Enhance AI Security and Compliance in Frontier Platform

OpenAI acquires Promptfoo, enhancing its Frontier platform with advanced AI security tools, critical for over 25% of Fortune 500 companies seeking compliance.

OpenAI has announced plans to acquire Promptfoo, an AI security platform that specializes in testing and identifying vulnerabilities in AI systems during development. This acquisition aims to enhance OpenAI’s enterprise AI capabilities by integrating Promptfoo’s technology into OpenAI Frontier, its platform designed for building and managing AI coworkers.

As organizations increasingly deploy AI agents into real-world workflows, OpenAI emphasizes that evaluation, security, and compliance have become critical requirements. Enterprises are searching for systematic methods to assess agent behavior, detect potential risks before deployment, and maintain comprehensive records to support governance, oversight, and accountability. The value of the acquisition has not been disclosed.

OpenAI develops advanced AI technologies utilized by businesses and developers worldwide, offering tools that facilitate the creation of AI-powered applications and the automation of workflows. Its enterprise platform, OpenAI Frontier, is tailored to help organizations build, deploy, and manage AI coworkers that operate across various business processes.

Promptfoo, on the other hand, focuses on assisting enterprises in evaluating and securing AI systems during their development phases. The company has developed tools to identify vulnerabilities, test model behavior, and enhance reliability in large language model (LLM) applications. Its technology is widely adopted across the enterprise sector, with over 25% of Fortune 500 companies implementing its tools. Additionally, Promptfoo maintains a popular open-source command-line interface and library for evaluating and red-teaming LLM applications.

Upon completion of the acquisition, Promptfoo’s security testing and evaluation capabilities will be directly integrated into the OpenAI Frontier platform. This integration is expected to embed automated security testing and red-teaming into enterprise AI development workflows, enabling companies to detect risks such as prompt injections, jailbreak attempts, data leaks, and other forms of unintended agent behavior prior to deployment.

The integration will also enhance oversight and accountability capabilities within the platform. Integrated reporting and traceability tools will allow organizations to document testing activity, monitor system changes over time, and maintain essential records to meet emerging governance, risk, and compliance expectations surrounding enterprise AI systems.

OpenAI has affirmed that Promptfoo’s open-source project will continue to be supported even as enterprise capabilities expand through Frontier. OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer of B2B applications, Srinivas Narayanan, remarked, “Promptfoo brings deep engineering expertise in evaluating, securing, and testing AI systems at enterprise scale. Their work helps businesses deploy secure and reliable AI applications, and we’re excited to bring these capabilities directly into Frontier.”

Meanwhile, Ian Webster, co-founder and CEO of Promptfoo, stated, “We started Promptfoo because developers needed a practical way to secure AI systems. As AI agents become more connected to real data and systems, securing and validating them is more challenging and important than ever. Joining OpenAI lets us accelerate this work, bringing stronger security, safety, and governance capabilities to the teams building real-world AI systems.”

This acquisition underscores the growing importance of security and compliance in AI development as enterprises increasingly rely on AI systems for critical operations. The integration of Promptfoo’s capabilities into OpenAI Frontier is poised to advance efforts in establishing robust safety nets and governance frameworks in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
