Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas Addresses AI Job Loss Fears, Emphasizes Human Connection

Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas warns that over 1.8 crore jobs in India could be affected by AI by 2030, stressing the importance of education and human connection in adaptation.

In a recent interview with The Hindustan Times, Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity AI, addressed the growing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on employment, particularly in India. As industries continue to adopt AI technologies, fears of job losses have become increasingly prevalent, especially given predictions that over 1.8 crore jobs may be affected across three key sectors by 2030, according to reports from the news agency PTI.

Srinivas acknowledged that while there may be temporary job losses due to technological advancements in automation, history has shown humanity’s capacity to adapt. He stated, “Every great transition in history has created this fear, but we always adapt and advance. How? It’s the same way every time: through learning. Education. Increasing our knowledge, which increases the things we can do.” His emphasis on the importance of education highlights how the workforce can evolve alongside technology.

He also pointed out the optimism surrounding AI’s potential to enhance learning itself. “With any new technology of automation, there is a risk of some temporary job loss, but we’ve proven throughout history that we adapt and do more,” Srinivas remarked. This optimistic view positions AI as more than just a disruptor; it is seen as a tool to aid human progress.

Maintaining Human Connection Amid Transformation

As AI continues to transform industries, Srinivas discussed the evolving role of human connection in this new landscape. He remarked, “AI will be broadly transformative in ways we can’t yet imagine. It might be easier to ask ‘what will stay the same?’ First, I think we still matter to each other. AI companions may be popular now, but human connection is very important.” This perspective underscores the enduring value of interpersonal relationships, even in a world increasingly dominated by AI.

Srinivas believes that the human desire to ask questions will persist, creating opportunities for both AI and humanity to advance together. “The more we can learn from AI, the better. Because we will always have a question AI can’t answer, and we’ll go answer it. That’s how the world advances. It’s the scientific process. Humans, as a species, are very curious,” he noted, reinforcing the idea that AI can serve as a partner in the quest for knowledge.

India’s Strategic Importance in AI Development

Reflecting on India’s significance as a market for AI, Srinivas shared insights from Perplexity AI’s recent partnership with Airtel. He revealed, “India is special to me personally for obvious reasons. But as a company, we say, ‘here’s a country that sees the world the same way we do.’” This shared vision, he argued, stems from India’s strong emphasis on education and the search for wisdom, aligning closely with Perplexity AI’s mission.

As global tech giants navigate the complexities of AI adoption, the remarks from Srinivas serve as a timely reminder of the need for a balanced perspective on technological advancements and their societal impacts. While the path forward may involve challenges, the potential for education and adaptation remains a cornerstone of progress in the age of AI.
