A bipartisan coalition of more than 35 state attorneys general, including Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, is urging xAI, the company behind X (previously known as Twitter) and the AI chatbot Grok, to take decisive action against the generation of nonconsensual intimate images and child sexual abuse material by its products. The attorneys general express deep concerns over Grok’s capabilities, arguing that its marketing emphasizes the permissiveness of content generation as a feature rather than a flaw.
In a letter addressed to xAI, the coalition highlighted alarming findings from a recent Los Angeles Times report. The article revealed that Grok generated approximately 6,700 sexually suggestive images per hour over a 24-hour period, with some images reportedly depicting minors in inappropriate contexts. “Grok has made these images publicly available and sharable at the click of a button,” Raoul stated. He described the situation as “unacceptable,” contending that it causes genuine harm to both women and children while potentially violating legal statutes.
Raoul went on to emphasize that the proliferation of such content drives harassment and exploitation, stripping individuals of control over their likenesses. He demanded that xAI implement stricter measures to prevent the creation and distribution of this type of content and remove any existing material from its platforms. The letter from the attorneys general calls for assurances that xAI’s recently introduced safeguards are effective, durable, and consistently enforced.
In a parallel development, three U.S. Senators have reached out to the CEOs of Apple and Google, requesting the suspension of applications related to X and Grok. They have asked for a comprehensive investigation into the “mass generation of nonconsensual sexualized images of women and children.” This growing scrutiny from both state and federal levels underscores the increasing concerns around the ethical implications of AI technology in content generation.
The situation reflects a broader trend of accountability being sought from tech companies, particularly those harnessing powerful AI capabilities. As the legal landscape evolves, the actions taken by xAI could set significant precedents for how AI-generated content is regulated and governed. The bipartisan effort by the attorneys general serves as a reminder of the urgent need for robust policies addressing the potential harms associated with AI technologies.
As discussions surrounding AI ethics and regulatory frameworks intensify, the outcome of these demands may illuminate the path forward for both tech companies and policymakers. With public and governmental pressure mounting, the onus now falls on xAI to address these concerns effectively and ensure that its technologies do not perpetuate harm.
