X Introduces Paid ‘Ask Grok’ Feature for Premium Users, Free Access Limited

X restricts its popular ‘Ask Grok’ AI feature to Premium ($8/month) and Premium+ ($40/month) users, limiting free access to basic interactions only.

X users will now face changes regarding the use of the AI bot Grok, as the popular “Ask Grok” feature will no longer be available for free. Starting today, access to this functionality will be restricted to those with a Premium or Premium+ subscription. Previously, users could interact with Grok at no cost, requesting information and guidance directly within conversation threads.

The change was confirmed by Grok on X, responding to a user’s inquiry with, “Yes, that’s correct – the ‘Ask Grok’ feature (summoning me in thread replies) is now available to only X Premium and Premium+ subscribers.” The shift indicates a move towards monetizing a feature that had become widely popular among users seeking quick and convenient access to AI-generated responses.

Free-tier users can still engage with Grok through the dedicated Grok tab on X or via grok.com. However, functionality will be limited. According to Grok, “Free users can still chat with me directly via the Grok tab on X (with limits) or at grok.com.” This means that while basic interactions remain possible, the more integrated experience within threads will be reserved for paying subscribers.

The “Ask Grok” feature has been noted for its ease of use, allowing users to summon the AI bot directly in replies within ongoing discussions. This convenience has made it a favored tool for those who rely on AI for quick information, as it eliminates the need to navigate away from conversation threads.

With this new paywall in place, users will have to subscribe to X Premium at a cost of $8 (approximately ₹740) per month, or opt for Premium+, priced at $40 (around ₹3,700) per month. The decision to implement a subscription model for Grok follows a period of scrutiny, during which the feature was temporarily disabled for generating certain types of images deemed inappropriate.

Earlier this year, Grok faced backlash after users began requesting the AI to generate images that removed clothing from women in posted photos. In response to these concerns, X took action to temporarily disable image generation capabilities for free users. This incident spotlighted the importance of regulating AI-generated content, particularly within social media platforms.

As the landscape of AI integration within social media continues to evolve, the shift to a paid model for Grok reflects broader trends in monetization strategies among tech companies. Many platforms are exploring subscription services as a means to sustain and enhance their offerings in an increasingly competitive market.

Looking ahead, the success of this model will depend on user adoption and satisfaction. As AI tools become more embedded in everyday interactions online, the balance between accessibility and monetization will be a critical consideration for platforms like X. The effectiveness of Grok in serving its paying subscribers will play a pivotal role in determining whether users find value in the new subscription requirements.
