The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Engineering is set to host its inaugural Husker AI Days, a comprehensive two-week initiative from April 13 to April 24. This campuswide event aims to demystify artificial intelligence (AI) and highlight its applications across education, research, and industry.
Designed to enhance understanding and accessibility of AI, Husker AI Days will feature a diverse array of events, including hands-on workshops, industry-led sessions, research discussions, and networking opportunities. Mark Stone, director of the college’s Prairie Initiative, stated that the initiative’s clear goal is to make AI “practical, accessible and actionable for the entire university community.”
A key feature of Husker AI Days is the involvement of four major global technology leaders: Google, MathWorks, Microsoft, and OpenAI. Each company will host dedicated programming during the two weeks aimed at providing attendees with direct insights into real-world AI tools, platforms, and workflows that are currently transforming industries such as engineering, data science, manufacturing, and software development.
In addition to corporate-led sessions, the initiative includes a variety of university-led workshops, demonstrations, and training sessions. These efforts will showcase the extensive AI activity occurring at UNL, with faculty and researchers sharing practical applications and emerging research. Participants will have opportunities to gain hands-on experience in applying AI concepts to relevant challenges.
Central to the event’s focus on student engagement are activities like a Promptathon and a Student Spotlight, which will highlight AI projects developed across campus. These showcases will serve as focal points for demonstrating how students are integrating AI into their academic work and research.
The culmination of Husker AI Days will occur on April 24, with the College of Engineering’s annual Senior Design Showcase. This event, scheduled from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in Kiewit Hall, will feature over 90 teams of graduating seniors. Their projects will reflect real-world professional challenges and often involve collaborations with industry clients, showcasing products and devices that could have immediate impacts.
Stone emphasized that Husker AI Days underscores the university’s commitment to preparing students and professionals for an AI-enabled future while fostering partnerships with leading technology organizations. The event is presented by the College of Engineering’s PRAIRIE Initiative (Pioneering Responsible AI for Research, Innovation, and Education), with support from the NU AI Institute, the College of Education and Human Sciences, the College of Business, the Holland Computing Center, and IANR.
As AI continues to shape various sectors, initiatives like Husker AI Days are crucial for equipping the next generation with the skills and knowledge necessary for navigating a rapidly evolving technological landscape. By engaging students, faculty, and industry leaders alike, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is positioning itself at the forefront of AI education and innovation.
